Development of Potato Technology in the Republic of Karelia
(PeTeKe) brings together Finnish and
Karelian organizations operating in the potato sector. MTT
Ruuki being one of the best in the field of potato resear in
Finland, started the two and a half year project in the
beginning of 2007. The focus of joint project Tacis-Interreg
is potato cultivation in the Republic of Karelia. The most
important financial contributor of the project is European
Union.
The aim of the project is to gain
information on the prevalence of potato diseases in Karelia
and to find out solutions for these problems. Finnish, more
resistant potato varieties will be tried in field tests, and
Russian varieties infected by viruses will be purified to
basic seed stock. Also fertilisation issues will be addressed
during the project. Land samples taken from the pilot farm
will be analysed, and fertilization recommendations will be
issued. Organic and chemical fertilisers will be tested in the
pilot farm, in order to find out the fertilisers’ impact on
the crops, both in terms of quality and quantity of the crop.
A general aim of the project is to offer
new solution models for the problems faced by the potato
cultivation in the Republic of Karelia. One aim is also to
increase guidance and information exchange between the potato
farmers and expert organisations in the field, similar to the
Finnish advisory organisation model. It is hoped that the
results of the project will reach the local farmers, who can
with simple, small steps improve the productivity of their
livelihood and potato crops. MTT Ruukki bears the main
responsibility of the project, whereas NorTech Oulu acts as
the principal project coordinator.
