SMARCTIC WP4: Natural resources management and economics

The secure a sustainable grwoth in the Arctic, it is essential that the Arctic's resources are exploited in a controlled manner, taking into account economic, social, cultural and environmental impacts. The EU underlines that all business activities must maintain a balance between environmental protection and the sustainable use of natural resources. The aim of this work package is to figure out how the exploitation of natural resources is realized taking into account environmental and economic sustainability as well as human wellbeing.

The vision for the future is a synergetic material flow, smart grid based energy solutions and optimization of data transfer services.

Synergic flows of materials means materials industries-border transfers. The idea is the same as the industrial ecological park construction. The difference of potential large distances between the different actors. This means, also, that the materials are close to where they are processed and shipped from the host company / industry needs

SMARCTIC WP4

Four pre-selected case studies are explored in this WP: (1) Zero-waste integrates of metallurgical industry and bioeconomy; (2) Bioeconomy and closed nutrient cycles; (3) Carbon-neutral mining and (4) Smart energy networks.

Smart energy networks refers to information-based distributed systems, in which high-energy producer, but also operate smaller numbers of the different forms of energy producers and consumers. Intelligent network possible two-way communication between producers and consumers. Efficient energy and material transfer requires the construction of hubs, in which the material, energy and information indirectly held / processed.

SEN

Hubs combine the data transfer and optimization of the service which acts as a database, a mediator and micro-networks, hubs, and the national energy network, and also shares in Nord Pool Spot price information. The operator service is also information broker "match-maker" the tonnage actors.
